Bob enlisted in the Air Force while a journalism student at the University of Illinois and became a pilot during World War II. Lt. Col. Busch made the Air Force his career fighting in both W.W. II and the Korean War. During W.W.II in the summer of 1944 Bob was assigned 32 bombing missions in B-24s over France and Germany. The first of those missions was only a few miles north of his grandfather's home. In 1950 Bob spent 2 days in Munich, his only time on German soil. Bob logged 8,000 pilot flying hours, mostly in heavy bombers, B-17, B-24, B-29, B-36, B-52. He had over 8 years overseas and has been in all 50 states, North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He has also flown over the North Pole.
While assigned to the Strategic Air Command Headquarters
in Omaha, Nebraska, he hunted with his dad, Herman on the old Hermann,
Sr. homestead. The house was no longer standing, but still standing was
the little school house nearby where Louis, Lydia, his dad, Herman and
Edwin had attended school.
